Sake based
If you haven’t tried Umeshu then you’re missing out. It’s a great treat that’s a perfect mix of tangy and sweet and is great on the rocks or with soda water.
This Umeshu is made by steeping local ume plums (technically apricots if you want to be pedantic) in sake for six months. Twice as many plums as is common for umeshu are used and the result is intense and delicious.

A sligtly more "adult" umeshu that is significantly less sweet than counterparts. A touch of bitterness rounds out the finish. Great on the rocks, chilled, or with soda. Would work as either an aperitif or a dessert wine.

Wakayama's Fruit
Wakayama's fruit are so famous within Japan that the area is known as the 'Fruit Kingdom'. Fittingly, Umeshu (Japanese plum wine) from Wakayama is the only one fitted with a GI (protected geographical indication) from the Japanese government. But citrus fruit from the area are just as famous and include many varieties that are not available abroad. These fruit sakes are radically different from western liquers, which are often sickly sweet. Japanese fruit sake are fresh, lively and well balanced. They are superb on the rocks on a warm summer day and delicious with soda as an aperitif.
